Job Description:
We are in the process of recruiting an Optometrist to join our team of 4 Ophthalmologists and one Optometrist at Ophthalmology Services of MMC.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Optometrists are eye care specialists who provide clinic-based, primary, non-surgical eye care. Core duties include:
- Perform both routine and medical eye examinations to assess vision and eye health. Examples include annual diabetic eye exams, detection of cataracts and glaucoma, as well as eyeglass and contact lens exams.
- Problem focused eye care such as pink eye, eye infection, dry eyes, allergy eyes, superficial eye injuries & foreign bodies, and epilation of eyelashes.
- Interpret exam findings to develop and recommend treatment plan. Educate and guide patients on treatments and recommendations.
- Prescribe glasses and contact lenses for refractive and medical conditions.
- Use and prescribe topical and oral medications to diagnose and treat conditions of the eye.
- Provide post-operative care in coordination with ophthalmology.
- Educate patients on importance of eye care and follow up with chronic health conditions such as diabetes. Educate patients on refractive, eye health and safety as it relates to daily activities. Workplace eye safety, solar eye protection, computer eye fatigue, children’s vision and contact lens wear are some examples.
Ensure quality of care by:
- Charting using EMR according to guidelines. Follow charting requirements for level coding and billing.
- Coordination of care and shared patient care with ophthalmology and with other health care providers. Referral and communication as needed. Provide reports and forms to schools, and for public safety ie the DMV and other agencies.
- Meet continuing education and other requirements for licensing and practice by Wisconsin State Board of Optometry.
In addition, an optometrist may have other areas of special interest practice, which may include Pediatric patients, Low Vision, Specialty Contact Lenses (Scleral Lenses, Keratoconus, Myopia Control, Multifocal etc.), or Vision Therapy.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Understanding of medical terminology.
- Excellent patient care skills.
- Strong manual dexterity skills.
- Five to seven years of specialized medical training/experience required.
Education / Licensure / Certification Qualifications:
- OD required.
- WI license is required.
- BLS certification is preferred.
- Valid DEA license required.
