About the Job:
NWCC infusion nurses care for adult outpatient oncology patients, with approximately 15% of their patient population including hematology and non-oncology patients. They administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood products, and non-oncology medications while assessing patient tolerance. NWCC infusion nurses provide safe and effective person-centered oncology care to critically ill patients. An oncology nurse’s job includes assessing patients, interpretation of immediate effects of chemotherapeutic agents, and educating patients about side effects and home management of oncology treatment. Oncology nurses work closely with the oncology providers, support services and the entire cancer center team. Oncology nursing requires emotional stability to help patients and their families work through the treatment process and cope with death if treatment fails.
Requirements:
A. ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy certification course completed within 4 month of start date, also known as ONS/ONCC Provider Card, certification must remain up to date. Preference given to applicants with chemotherapy/immunotherapy certification.
B. Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) required, or willing to obtain certification within 1 year of meeting eligibility criteria (minimum 2,000 oncology hours). Specialty certification will be maintained throughout term of employment in cancer center (exam and CEU credits required every five years to maintain).
C. Administration of high-risk hazardous drugs on a daily basis, potential exposure to chemotherapeutic agents. Administration of blood and blood products. Knowledge and ability to wear correct PPE. Knowledge on cleaning and management of chemotherapy spills.
D. Expertise in maintenance, and care of venous access devices including: central lines, ports, PICCs, and peripheral lines. Must demonstrate competence and expertise in port access, IV starts, central line dressing changes, phlebotomies, intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, obtaining lab specimens, insertion of indwelling catheters, care of G/J tubes, blood administration, and dressing changes (sterile and non-sterile).
E. Expertise in management of critical patient conditions requiring immediate nursing intervention to prevent decompensation of condition/severe anaphylaxis or mortality and also to promote patient to receive chemotherapeutics/immunotherapy agents. Nurses must have skills to manage emergent hypersensitivity reactions to intravenous drugs, deploy expert nursing assessment skills, and have the ability to work with oncology team and autonomously at times (standing orders only).
F. Nurse must be able to evaluate patient condition, the oncology cephalocaudal assessment, labs, oncology diagnosis, and chemotherapy/immunotherapy treatment regimen to determine eligibility for treatment along within the written parameters and provider collaboration as indicated.
G. Expert at providing holistic patient-centered care, provide compassion and care, patient and family education, collaborative health-care referrals/recommendations, hospice/palliative care needs, and triage of patients.
H. Provide nursing care, comprehensive assessment, collaboration of care, interpretation of outside orders, and administration of intravenous medication to non-oncology patients.
I. BLS certification required, ACLS preferred.
J. Must maintain a current WI RN license
K. Competent with EMR and other required software within 30 days of hire.
Shift Time: Monday-Friday, standard medical practice hours
