Diabetes patients and those who assist in the care of people with diabetes learn the basic skills and information they need to self manage their diabetes and prevent complications of diabetes. Diabetes education is available on an inpatient or outpatient basis. This education is provided by Certified Diabetes Educators including Registered Dietitians and Registered Nurses. There is a charge for self-management education, which is often covered by private insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. A physician referral is necessary for insurance reimbursement. However, individuals may refer themselves. Pre-diabetes education is available in individual sessions and group classes. This is a free class. Memorial Medical Center is a recognized provider of diabetes education by the American Diabetes Association.
