Q&A with Jennifer Mrnak, RN, OCN, Northwest Wisconsin Cancer Center

jenmrnakWhat does an oncology nurse do?
An Oncology nurse has many roles when taking care of patients; we assess, educate, treat side effects, infuse chemotherapy, offer support & listen, coordinate care, etc. We travel the journey with them in every aspect.

What can a patient expect during a chemotherapy appointment at the Northwest Wisconsin Cancer Center?
Labs are drawn either through a port or peripherally. The patient then sees the oncologist, orders are given and chemotherapy is mixed at the pharmacy. The patient is thoroughly assessed by the oncology nurse, pre-meds and chemotherapy is then started. Once patient’s chemotherapy is complete they are discharged home.

What is the largest misconception people have about chemotherapy?
It will make you sick.

What is one piece of advice you would give patients to improve their overall health?

If you are a smoker, you should really quit.
Eat a well balanced diet and exercise.
